Go look at birds and bugs outside btw. It can save your life
Not a joke btw. Please go outside and pay attention to all the little creatures around you, even in your backjard, the bugs scurring for nectar and the little birds chirping and flying around, try to id them too, read something about them, learn some facts. Sit and watch them, they can mean the world to you.
In a statement to The Post, a spokesperson for NBCUniversal claimed the tree work is simply an annual ritual at this time of year. “We understand that the safety tree trimming of the Ficus trees we did on Barham Blvd. has created unintended challenges for demonstrators, that was not our intention. In partnership with licensed arborists, we have pruned these trees annually at this time of year to ensure that the canopies are light ahead of the high wind season,” they wrote. “We support the WGA and SAG’s right to demonstrate and are working to provide some shade coverage. We continue to openly communicate with the labor leaders on-site to work together during this time.”

If those trees were pollarded annually, the cut areas would NOT look like that. There would be big knobs of old growth at the trimming sites. Not seeing any of that here. The way those trees were topped (not pollarded, which is a very careful process that has to begin when the tree is immature) is excellent way to kill them due to loss of hydration, open sites to infection and parasitism during the best time of year for both, lack of nutrition due to so little greenery and new budding growth being left, sunburn and other exposure damage, and a myriad of other possibilities. Plus, if they were topped annually, they would not have the lovely drooping branches seen in the other picture but would have tons of vertical suckers instead.
This is what an annually pollarded mature tree should look like:
If this was done by the city, the public works arborists should be protesting in front of city hall and screaming their heads off right now. I’m not hearing about that, so… Tree law!
whenever I finally realize that one of my mutuals is a sideblog and that the random user that’s been liking my posts was my mutual all along I feel like bruce willis at the end of the sixth sense
I joined a roleplay guild once in a game, and immediately set off to make some friends. i was really quite chatty with this one girl that i hit off with really quick and we did a whole bunch of in-game hanging out and getting to know each other while i was trying to figure out my character, doing missions and stuff. you know, like you do. she was rad, really cool, exactly my sense of humor… i was So Happy to meet somebody right off the gun that i got along with so well.
now, a month or something goes by. and while i met the guild leader a bunch of times (ie, she was the one that originally recruited me actually) and i always listened when she was talking in guild chat about guild stuff, and attended the guild meetings and things, i was pretty intimidated and kinda just kept my head down when she was around. i mean. i didn’t wanna mess up and get kicked out? like, Guild Leader. The Big Bwana. Head Honcho, even. Honchess. whatever.
it never once occurred to me to notice that my new good friend who hung out with me all the time and was so clever with words was never logged in and online when the guild leader was. flew clear over my head.
… do you see where this is leading?
so one day my friend asks me why i never talk much at the guild meetings when i have all these cool ideas, and i embarrassedly confess in the text equivalent of a whisper that the guild leader was kind of intimidating actually. but she seemed very nice? but god, i was never going to speak up at a guild meeting so help me gravy, i didn’t want her to think i was dumb. and my new good friend says “give me a number from one to a hundred” and i say uh? and give her one and she just… logs off.
and then guild leader lady logs in and says in guild chat “you idiot (chiclet), your number is 15” and i never, ever, EVER lived that down.
People don’t like to admit it bcs cringe or w/e but Homestuck really did revolutionize the webcomic as a storytelling medium and I am endlessly frustrated that before webcomic artists could really stretch our legs fucking webtoonz swooped in, set a new, more restrictive standard, and then monetized and monopolized the ever living fuck out of the concept of The Webcomic until it drove away anyone who couldn’t be a professional quality manga artist for free, and now the only webcomics that actually feel like spiritual successors to Homestuck are so obscure they’re basically cult classics that you have to beg people to read.
Like it’s just so wild to be in high school and see Homestuck be like “we’re using like fifteen different artistic mediums to tell this story bcs we can” and be really fucking inspired by that, only to grow up and see basically every webcomic ever have to conform to One Single Standard or fucking perish.
Actually, I realized my real point here: we all need to make our art weirder. Please make weird art. I want more stuff like Prequel Adventure and 17776 and MyHouse.wad and I want it now. Capitalism thrives on conformity. We must be weird at all costs.
